Weiner Must Register as Sex Offender

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), who is nearing the end of a 21-month prison term for sending sexual text messages to a minor, has been reportedly required by a New York judge to register as a sex offender in the state’s database.

Weiner, who served in Congress for almost 12 years, was registered as a Level 1 sex offender with a low risk of offending again, The Associated Press reported Friday.

Under state law, he will not appear in the publicly viewable list of convicted sex offenders, but will have his personal information, including his address, available via a state-run toll-free telephone line.

According to the AP, Weiner will be registered on the list for at least 20 years, and will be forced to report to police any changes of address. He will also be required to appear at a police station for a photograph every three years.

Weiner pleaded guilty in 2017 to sending a lewd picture to a 15-year-old girl, years after the former congressman was previously engulfed in scandal in 2011 over sending a lewd picture to a college student.

After leaving Congress in 2011, he briefly attempted a run for New York City mayor before his campaign was sunk by related allegations of sexual misconduct.

He is currently married to Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, who filed for divorce in 2017 but has since dropped the court proceedings in an attempt to resolve the issue out of the public eye.

Weiner is set to be released from custody on May 14, and will face three years of court-ordered supervision.
