5 Guards From Troubled County Jail in Ohio Indicted

CLEVELAND (AP) — FIVE guards from a troubled and overcrowded county jail in Cleveland have been indicted on charges that include civil rights violations. Four are accused of felonious assault.

The charges announced Monday by the Ohio Attorney General’s office involve three separate incidents since July inside the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Corrections Center.

In the most recent case that happened last month, two guards are accused of using excessive force against an inmate restrained in a chair.

Two other guards were indicted on felonious assault charges after investigators say they used pepper spray on a restrained inmate.

The jail in downtown Cleveland has been under scrutiny since the deaths of seven prisoners over a four-month period last year.

A report by the U.S. Marshals Service called conditions at the jail “inhumane” and unsafe.
