WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky was one of seven U.S. Senators who voted no on the National Defense Authorization Act, legislation which will grant the United States government the authority to detain and hold indefinitely any person, including American citizens on American soil, suspected of terrorist ties.There has been a great deal of confusion and controversy surrounding this bill, and no wonder. Several Senators attempted to introduce amendments which would clarify the language set forth inS Amdt 1274. However, despite Senator Paul’s successful campaign to eradicate S Amdt 1274, the bill is still extremely dangerous, and a very real threat to Habeas Corpus, Posse Camitatus, and our Bill of Rights.The problem; although Senator Rand Paul was successful in defeating S Amdt 1274 through forcing a roll-call vote, the original bill still contains language which experts say would grant the American government the authority to detain and hold indefinitely American citizens suspected of terrorist ties, all without due process.Make no mistake, yesterday, 93 U.S. Senators voted to surrender our liberty and strip away our rights, despite protests by top intelligence and military officials warning of the dire consequences.For example, according to Sen. Paul, possession of more than 7 days worth of food is good enough for our government to consider you a suspected terrorist. If this legislation passes we are essentially surrendering what little protection remains from a tyrannical government.President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the bill if it passes the House – a threat that seems unlikely to be followed through with, considering the legislation is a defense spending bill.
